No trip to New York is complete without a Broadway show. It’s easily one of the top things to do in New York, with people coming from all over the world to see the shows and some being booked out months in advance. This all means it’s really important to plan and book your tickets for the top Broadway shows in New York in advance.

Over the years, we’ve visited New York—especially Manhattan—many times! It’s one of our favourite cities in the US and there is so much to do once you’ve arrived in the Big Apple.

Make sure you don’t miss the world-renowned Broadway shows that are dotted around Times Square. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s best to describe Broadway like the West End in London: it’s an area where all the iconic shows are located.

So, to help you get the most out of your visit to New York, I’m sharing the top Broadway shows that you can’t miss.

1.) Moulin Rouge! The Musical

We absolutely loved watching Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway and it’s one show you won’t want to miss when visiting New York.

This show follows the love story of Christian and Satine (who is part of the Moulin Rouge Cabaret in Paris) and the production is out-of-this-world.

The show is so fun-filled and energetic, when it’s over you feel like you’ve just left the biggest party in Manhattan. We chose the Can Can! Table Seating that’s located right in the middle of the action, it was so incredible.

Oh, and be sure to always go to The Broadway Collection website to help make your choice of shows to see. This site provides descriptions, images, photos and more, and helps you make the right choice of shows and seats by connecting you with the official, most trusted sites to buy tickets.

2.) The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is one of the top Broadway shows in New York: it’s crass, shocking and laugh-out-loud funny. It follows the life of two Elders (Price and Cunningham) who are sent to Uganda to spread the word.

It won heaps of Tony Awards and is the perfect musical if you prefer a comedic Broadway show. From the creators of South Park, this show will have you laughing in no time!

3.) Hamilton

Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is one of the most popular shows on Broadway, and with good reason! It’s a musical that follows Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers.

Not only is the narrative really interesting, but the music is so epic! It’s quickly become one of the world’s most-loved musicals.

4.) Blue Man Group

Probably one of New York’s most surprising and inventive theatrical experiences, Blue Man Group is a performance like nothing else.

Known for the impeccable physical comedy (the entire show is wordless) and use of unconventional objects as musical instruments, Blue Man Group is the perfect show if you are looking for something different that is still incredibly fun to watch.

5.) Wicked

If you’re a fan of The Wizard of Oz, you won’t want to miss Wicked on Broadway. That being said, even if you’ve not seen The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is still a treat.

Wicked delves deep into the lives and story of the witches of Oz, whilst belting out some incredible musical numbers like ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘Popular’ which so many of us are familiar with.

Wicked is an incredible Broadway musical and well worth booking when visiting New York City.

Just be sure, like I’ve said before, to always book through trusted websites and remember that The Broadway Collection partners with the theatres and shows themselves to help direct your purchase through the official sites. This way, you won’t have to deal with ticket touts, bargaining and disappointment if you don’t get the seats you want.

6.) The Lion King

Great for families and adults alike, The Lion King is one of the top Broadway shows in New York that’s great for all ages.

I absolutely love the puppetry they use for all the animals on stage; just watch out for the giraffe that occasionally reaches down into the stall seats. His neck will reach right down to you!

If you love Disney’s The Lion King, then you’ll love the musical.

7.) Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, then you need to book tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Now, what makes this show so special is that it tells the story, 19 years on, from the original Harry Potter books. It’s incredible to see and one that’s well worth watching whilst visiting New York.

Though, just a heads up, tickets can sell-out fast at peak times. If you’re travelling, make sure to book your tickets in advance of your trip.

8.) & Juliet

We absolutely love & Juliet, it’s one of the top Broadway shows in New York that you don’t want to miss.

The musical follows the life of Juliet (from Shakespeare’s play; Romeo and Juliet) after she doesn’t take her own life. Not only that, it mixes a whole heap of popular songs from people like Britney Spears and Katy Perry.

& Juliet is one of those Broadway shows that will have you dancing in your seat. It’s so incredible and the cast is so talented. We loved every second of the show.
