Montreal Canadiens defenceman Kaiden Guhle left Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning with an upper-body injury and will not return, the team announced.

Guhle was injured early on in the first period when Nikita Kucherov laid a heavy hit from behind on Guhle, sending him face-first into the boards. Guhle had clocked only 1:14 of ice time when the incident occurred.

He was able to skate off on his own, but immediately went to the locker room and would not return to the team’s bench to start the second period.

The Edmonton-native has enjoyed a steady campaign as part of the Canadiens’ top defensive pair. He is logging an average of 21:08 of TOI this year and has six goals and 22 points in 69 games.

He has missed only five games this season after suffering a season-ending lower-body injury in March last year.
