New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, met with incoming border czar Tom Homan on Thursday, a meeting that both described in positive terms.
“His goal is the same goal that I have,” Adams said at the press conference following the match. “We cannot allow dangerous individuals to commit repeated acts of violence in our American cities.”
Homan said in an interview with Dr. Phil McGrew after the meeting that he believed what he and Adams discussed Thursday “could save lives,” thanking Adams for meeting with him.

Just days after winning the presidential election last month, Homan served as one of the earliest key hires in his second administration. Homan, a former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, supported the Trump administration's “zero tolerance” policy. to the policy that led to the separation of families at the southern border.
Trump has made immigration and the border a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, promising mass deportations and frequently using derogatory terms against migrants.
New York has laws that limit local agencies' cooperation with federal deportation efforts. Adams cannot unilaterally revoke the city's sanctuary status; rather, the status is determined by the city council.
But the mayor said earlier this year that he supports a bill that would roll back parts of the city's sanctuary policy.
“I've said it many times, long before this election, that this cannot be a safe haven for violent individuals,” Adams said during a press conference Thursday. “You have a right, a privilege to live in this country, and those who want to commit violence violate that privilege.
The city saw an influx of migrants in 2022 and 2023, prompting Adams to urge the federal government to provide additional aid and funds.
Adams' political future has been uncertain since he was indicted in September on wire fraud and bribery charges, which he has denied of any wrongdoing.
