The DOJ filed the lawsuit because Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) signed an executive document that allegedly allowed him to illegally remove voters in Virginia.
AP reported.
The lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, says an executive order issued by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin in August requiring daily updates to voter rolls to remove ineligible voters violates federal law. The National Voter Registration Act requires a 90-day “quiet period” before an election to maintain voter rolls.
“Congress enacted the National Voter Registration Act's quiet period limit to prevent error-prone, eleventh-hour efforts that too often disenfranchise qualified voters,” Assistant US Attorney Kristen Clarke said in a statement. “The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy, and the Department of Justice will continue to protect the rights of qualified voters.”
Youngkin may try to help Trump in Virginia, but there are also key close races in the state, as well as state legislative races.
For all of Trump's antics, it's a story that doesn't get as much attention as it used to, but at the state level, Republican officials in the states they control have continually tried to take away the right to vote and make it more difficult. to vote
The tricks of the Republicans have not changed. For decades, the GOP has been trying to reshape the electorate through voter pressure, and those efforts are still going strong amid the intense focus on the presidential race.
