Sterling, the chief operating officer of the Georgia Secretary of State's office, is part of an effort that began after the last presidential election to bring together Republican officials who are committed to protecting the nation's election systems and the people. who run them. They want officials to reinforce the message that elections are safe and accurate, an approach they say is especially important as the country heads into another divisive presidential race.
The group has held meetings in several states, with more planned before the Nov. 5 election.

“This has never been and never will be about Trump specifically,” said Matt Germer, managing director of the R Street Institute and lead organizer of the effort. “It's about higher level democratic principles” – what does it mean to be a conservative who believes in democracy, the rule of law?
The efforts of Republican election officials may not be about Trump specifically, but it is in response to lies that have been and are being spread by the former president.
The work of this group is a good reminder that not all Republicans are election-denying MAGAs. As the nation saw in 2020, there are some Republicans at the state level who are willing to put democracy first and resist Trump's efforts to destroy the foundation of American governance.
These Republican efforts in states like Kentucky, Kansas, Georgia, Utah and others, when combined with Democrats who also support election protection, create a state-level barrier against Trump's election lies.
Democracy is bigger than party politics, and if many of us come together to defend democracy, we will still have a country where we can freely engage in political differences in the future.
